SOFTBALL SPOILS HOMERS BY ANDERSON AND GRAY WITH DOUBLEHEADER LOSS TO WILLIAM WOODS

Box Score

St. Louis – [Game One Box] [Game Two Box] The Missouri Baptist softball team dropped a pair of games to William Woods today. The Spartans fell in game one 6-5, before dropping game two 7-2.

Missouri Baptist (22-14, 13-7 AMC) led the majority of game one before allowing a late-inning comeback.

Senior Jena Trombley earned the tough loss in the circle. She pitched 0.2 innings of relief and allowed the go-ahead run to cross home plate.

Sophomore Andrea Chessor tossed 6.1 innings. She allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits.

Payton Anderson led the Spartans with three hits in four at-bats. She scored twice, and bombed a 2-run homer. It was her 12th home run of the season, which leads the AMC.

Freshman Lexi Gray poked one hit in the game, a 2-run long ball to left-center.

William Woods got the scoring going with a run on two hits in the top of the 1st.

Missouri Baptist answered with two runs on one hit in the bottom of the frame. Corey Pitchford reached on a one-out error, setting-up a favorable situation for the next MBU hitter. Payton Anderson worked the count to 2-and-2, then unloaded on an opposite field blast, which gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Anderson singled down the left field line to get the inning going. With two outs, freshman Lexi Gray hit a towering home run to left-center, which extended the MBU lead to 4-1.

The Spartans added another run on two hits in the bottom of the 5th. Pitchford led off with a single up the middle. She moved to second when Anderson grounded out to short. Andrea Chessor singled to deep right-center to score Pitchford, giving the Spartans a 5-1 lead.

In the circle, Chessor retired 10 consecutive hitters from the second inning to the sixth.

In the top of the 7th, Chessor recorded the first out of the inning when she forced the Owls hitter to pop up to second. After back-to-back singles, the Spartan pitcher induced a ground ball to third. As Diaz went to tag the runner, the ball popped-out of her glove, which allowed all three runners to be safe. That set off a series of plays in favor of William Woods, which resulted in five runs to cross home plate and gave the Owls a 6-5 lead.

Anderson singled to shallow center to keep the game alive with two outs in the 7th, but aggressive base running resulted in the final out being recorded and the Owls winning, 6-5.

Game two saw the Spartans take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd. Darrian Chrzanoski singled down the left field line to begin the inning and would move to second when Corey Pitchford laid down a sac bunt. Kara Pochon followed with a single to right-center, which scored Chrzanoski.

Freshman Madison Calvert looked for the shutdown inning in the top of the 4th, and seemed to get just that. In what would have been the third out of the inning, an error kept the Owls at the plate. WWU followed with six runs in the inning, all unearned.

Another unearned run in the top of the 5th extended the Owls lead to 7-1.

Missouri Baptist plated one run in the bottom of the 7th to cut the deficit to 7-2, but were unable to dig out of the massive hole.

Kara Pochon led MBU with a 2-for-4 performance. She drove in two RBI and doubled once.

Madison Calvert posted to tough-luck loss. She pitched 3.2 innings and allowed six unearned runs on seven hits.

Freshman Nicole Hughes pitched the final 3.1 innings. She allowed one unearned run on two hits.

The Spartans will attempt to bounce back with a doubleheader tomorrow against Stephens. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
