PITCHFORD ROPES FIVE HITS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OVER STEPHENS

ST. LOUIS – [Game One Box] [Game Two Box] Andrea Chessor and Madison Calvert tossed complete games, as the Missouri Baptist softball team swept a doubleheader against Stephens, 7-0 and 9-1. The Spartans ended American Midwest Conference play with a 15-9 record.

Missouri Baptist (24-14) got things going from the start, as leadoff hitter Kelsey Snider reached on a walk. She swiped second base and scored when Corey Pitchford roped a single up the middle. Payton Anderson laced a double to deep right-center, which scored Pitchford. The Spartans led 2-0 after one inning.

Mariah Randazzo reached on a two-base error to lead off the 5th inning and moved to third on Kelsey Snider's sac bunt. Payton Anderson followed with a two-out double to left, scoring Randazzo. The third double of the game for Anderson increased the MBU lead to 3-0.

The Spartans tacked four runs on the board in the bottom of the 6th. Kara Pochon ripped a triple to deep right-center and would score on the next pitch when Dee Dee Peters singled up the middle. Donyelle DeMarse reached on a walk, moving Peters to second. A wild pitch moved Peters to third and pinch-runner Chloe Galati to second. Randazzo plated Peters with a single to center, increasing the MBU lead to 5-0. Pitchford followed with a single to left-center, which scored Galati and Randazzo. The Spartans led 7-0 after six innings.

Chessor retired the side in order in the 7th to earn the victory, 7-0.

She struck out five batters and scattered just four hits over the seven innings.

Payton Anderson led the offensive attack with a 4-for-4 performance, two RBI, and three doubles.

Kara Pochon went 2-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Dee Dee Peters roped two hits in three at-bats and tallied a run scored and an RBI.

Corey Pitchford recorded three RBI with two hits in four at-bats.

In game two, the Spartans needed just five innings to earn the 9-0 victory.

Kelsey Snider led off the first inning with a hit by pitch, and would score on Corey Pitchford's triple down the left field line. Pitchford would score when Jennifer Sparks was caught stealing second. That gave the Spartans a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The two-out magic came in the second inning. After the first two Spartans were retired, Donyelle DeMarse roped a single up the middle to extend the inning. Randazzo followed with a single to center, which moved DeMarse to second. Freshman Lexi Gray stepped into the box as a pinch-hitter and blasted a three-run bomb to left field, her third long ball of the season. Pitchford kept the inning alive with a single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. Anderson drew a walk and both she and Pitchford would score on Andrea Chessor's double off the fence in left. Missouri Baptist led 7-0 after two innings.

Stephens scored a run for the first time in 10 innings after roping three hits off of starting pitcher Madison Calvert. Calvert got an inning-ending double play when she started the 1-2-3 sequence.

The Spartans posted two more runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Randazzo singled to left to start the inning and would move to second on Kelsey Snider's bunt single. Pitchford followed with a double over the centerfielder's head, which scored Randazzo. Anderson hit a sac fly to left-center, sending Snider to cross home plate.

Calvert gave up two singles in the top of the 5th, but would not allow a Star to cross the plate, preserving the 9-1 victory.

Calvert improved to 8-2 with the complete game victory. She gave up one unearned run on six hits and tallied one strikeout.

Pitchford led the offense with a perfect 3-for-3 performance. She scored twice, posted two RBI, and tallied one double and one triple.

Lexi Gray hit the 3-run homer in her lone at-bat of the game.

Randazzo posted two hits in two at-bats with two runs scored.

Andrea Chessor recorded two RBI on one double.

The Spartans will host St. Louis Community College on Friday in exhibition play. The doubleheader will be Senior Day for six MBU seniors.
