Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [Game One Box] [Game Two Box] The Missouri Baptist softball team jumped back into American Midwest Conference play with two dominating victories over St. Louis College of Pharmacy. The Spartans won game one, 14-1, before winning the nightcap, 11-0.
Missouri Baptist (12-8, 7-3 AMC) dominated from the get-go, scoring runs in the first three innings. The Spartans pounded ten hits in the first game and utilized a 10-run third inning to take control.
The Spartans got on the board in the top of the 1st inning with two runs on one hit. Dee Dee Peters led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on a stolen base. She moved to third when Mikala Torrence walked, setting-up first and third with just one out. Peters scored on a passed ball, which moved Torrence all the way to third. Torrence would score the second run of the inning on a wild pitch.
Missouri Baptist exploded for a season-high ten runs in the top of the second inning. The Spartans ripped six hits in the inning and were aided by four Eutectic errors. All nine players reached base in the inning, and 16 Spartans were sent to the plate. Kelsey Snider singled twice to highlight the inning.
The top of the 3rd saw two more runs cross the plate, as the Spartans took a 14-0 lead. Andrea Chessor singled to center with one out. She would jog home when Kara Pochon lined an inside the park home run down the left field line on the first pitch of her at-bat.
The Eutectics got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with one run on three hits.
The final four half-innings went scoreless and the Spartans would take home the victory, 14-1, in five innings.
Senior Jena Trombley earned the victory, tossing 3.0 innings. She gave up one earned runs on five hits, and struck out two batters.
Freshman Madison Calvert tossed the final 2.0 innings and gave up just one hit. She tallied two strikeouts and walked one batter.
Pochon led the way for the Spartans at the plate, reaching base in all three plate appearances. She went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBI, home run, and one walk.
Kelsey Snider also posted two hits in the contest, needing four at-bats to do so. She added two runs scored.
The Spartans also stole six bases as a team. Peters and Torrence led with two each, while Mariah Randazzo and Donyelle DeMarse added one.
In game two, Missouri Baptist pounded 13 hits and utilized the extra base hit to score 11 runs in a shutout victory. The Spartans cracked five singles, three doubles, one triple, and home run over the five innings.
The top of the 1st inning did not see a run cross home plate after Mikala Torrence was stranded on third after a two-out triple.
Missouri Baptist scored six runs on five hits in the top of the 2nd. Senior Corey Pitchford hit her second home run of the season, this time the grand of them all. It was the first grand slam for the Spartans since the 2014 season. Donyelle DeMarse singled to left to score two runs, which began the scoring spurt.
Missouri Baptist closed-out the scoring with five more runs in the 3rd inning. Donyelle DeMarse highlighted the inning when she crushed a shot to deep right-center. She motored around the bases for an RBI triple. Dee Dee Peters followed with an RBI double down the left field line.
Andrea Chessor and Nicole Hughes teamed-up for the combined shutout. Chessor tossed 3.0 scoreless innings and allowed just two hits. She tallied one strikeout and did not walk a batter.
Hughes tossed two perfect innings and struck out three batters.
Donyelle DeMarse led the Spartans with a 3-for-3 performance. She scored twice and drove in three RBI, including a triple.
Corey Pitchford had just one hit in four at-bats, but she pounded the grand slam.
Dee Dee Peters and Kara Pochon each posted two hits in the contest.
Missouri Baptist will battle four more opponents this week. The Spartans are scheduled to travel to Lindenwood-Belleville on Wednesday, before taking on NCAA Division II Maryville on Thursday. The week's finale will feature the Spartans and Harris-Stowe. The fourth opponent is a pesky mother nature.
