Box Score ST LOUIS- [BOX SCORE] Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball continued conference play on Tuesday night against William Woods. The Spartans overcame a huge deficit in the fourth set to close out the Owls 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24).
MBU opened with what would end up being their best set of the night. The Spartans jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. Although William Woods would briefly tie the game, the home team took control with a 13-4 run to close the opening frame 25-16.
In the second set, Woods appeared to knock MBU out of unison. The Spartans could not build any momentum and dropped the set 25-23. After an early 6-3 lead for the Owls, neither team trailed by more than two for the duration of the set.
Missouri Baptist appeared to regain their footing in the third set. They never trailed on their way to a 25-18 victory. Freshman Kelly Wilson stepped in with five kills to power the Spartans. A kill by Tina Medanovic closed it out to put MBU up 2-1 in the match.
The back and forth continued into the fourth frame. William Woods stormed out of the gates to grab 14-6 lead. The Spartans needed two timeouts to finally find their game. After trailing by as many as nine, MBU battled back to a 23-21 deficit. Then, facing set point at 24-21, they manufactured five straight points to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Marion Couraud and Mallory Dillon provided the kills to fuel the comeback.
Four Spartans registered double-digit kills in the match, led by Mallory Dillon with 17. Cate Cigarini provided 14 on 26 attacks, for a .346 hitting percentage. Tina Medanovic was next up with 11 kills.
Marion Couraud posted her third double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs. She also tied a career-high with four service aces.
After sitting out last Friday's match against Vanguard, Kelly Wilson returned with eight kills on 14 attacks for a team-high .429 hitting percentage.
Megan Huffman posted 50 assists, while Natalie Gremaud contributed 23 digs to lead the Spartans.
Missouri Baptist improved to 25-6 on the season and 10-0 in AMC Conference play.
Next up for MBU will be what many are saying is the most important match of the year. The No. 7 ranked Park Pirates will visit Lacey Gymnasium on Thursday at 7 pm. Park comes in 27-1 on the season and riding a 23 match winning streak. The NAIA has billed it as the National Match of the Week.
