Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE ASBURY] [BETHEL BOX SCORE] The Spartans traveled to Bethel, Tenn. to take on both Asbury (Ky.) University and Bethel University. The team dropped game one 2-1 to Asbury and 12-3 to Bethel.
Missouri Baptist (1-3) received another quality start from Andrea Chessor in game one against Asbury. The junior tossed six strong innings of four-hit ball. She allowed two runs (one earned), while the MBU offense could only muster one run across.
The Spartans took advantage of an error to strike first in the first inning. Rachel Garcia reached on an error with one out and advanced to second after Payton Anderson flew out to right. Amanda Williams then came through with an RBI single to score Garcia and put MBU up 1-0.
The Eagles evened things up in the bottom half after MBU committed two errors. A misplayed grounder allowed Tisha Lane to advance to first, she then stole second, advanced to third on a single and scored after the second Spartan miscue.
While the Spartans managed three hits in the next six innings, Asbury scratched a run across in the third. Kateland Hunter reached on a fielder's choice and then came around to score with two outs when Sarah Wiggins doubled to deep left.
MBU then struggled in game two, falling 12-3 to Bethel (5-1) and its high-powered offense. The Wildcats have now scored 11+ runs in their last four games.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before Bethel scored six unanswered runs. Deanna Peters reached on an error and stole second with two outs. Amanda Williams then came through with an RBI single to get MBU on the board.
Bethel then added two runs in the bottom half when Amanda Brandenburg homered on the first pitch she saw. The Wildcats would also score four runs on six hits in the second and five runs on five hits in the third to break the game open.
The Wildcats led 11-2 after three innings. The Spartans got their second run on an RBI single from Shelby Poropat in the third. They added their third and final run when Rachel Garcia homered to right-center on the first pitch she saw to start the fifth.
Williams went 3-3 for the game and 4-7 for the day. Jenny Sparks also performed well at the plate, going 2-2 in game two.
The ladies return to action on Wednesday, March 2nd against McKendree University in a double header. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
