Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE 1] [BOX SCORE 2] The Missouri Baptist Softball team split a doubleheader with Columbia College Friday afternoon. Each game ended in a 1-0 score, with the Spartans winning game two thanks to an early RBI single from Payton Anderson.
Game two featured 15 hits, but the only one that mattered came in the top of the first. Chloe Jennings reached on a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then reached third on a wild pitch. Anderson then delivered a big two-out single to bring her home and put MBU ahead 1-0.
The one run of support proved to be enough for Spartan righty Cierra Liddick. Liddick recorded the complete game shutout while scattering seven hits. After a two-out single, Liddick got Carly Spalding, the potential winning run, to fly out to left to end the game.
Eight different Spartans recorded one hit each in the win. They had other scoring chances, including a bases loaded opportunity in the sixth, but thanks to Liddick's strong performance the one run would be all they'd need.
Andrea Chessor allowed just one run in seven innings of work in game one, but that turned out to be enough offense for the Cougars. Molly Carter delivered an RBI triple in the first to plate Rachel Sullivan and that 1-0 score would uphold throughout the contest.
Columbia hurler Paxton Welch shutout MBU over seven innings, while only allowing three hits. Payton Anderson, Amanda Williams and Rachel Garcia all recorded one hit each. The team's best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when Williams singled and Elder reached on an error, but they couldn't capitalize.
Five different Cougars recorded a hit each against Chessor. Chessor recorded three strikeouts, while issuing zero walks.
The Spartans continue their Columbia, Mo. trip tomorrow afternoon when they take on Stephens College. First pitch in game one is set for 12:00 pm.
