CHESSOR'S BIG DAY GIVES SPARTANS SWEEP OF MUSTANGS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – Andrea Chessor allowed just one run in 15 innings of work Saturday afternoon to lead the Spartans to a doubleheader sweep of Central Baptist, 1-0, 2-1. Chessor also hit the game-winning home run in the top of the eighth inning of game two to top off her standout performance and scored all three MBU runs.

The junior's efforts helped Missouri Baptist (22-16, 9-5) bounce back from two losses to Lyon College the day before. Chessor came two outs away from no-hitting the Mustangs in the opener, before allowing a single to Kaylee St. John. She then preserved the shutout and the win by getting the final batter to fly out to right to end the game.

Chessor didn't allow a baserunner until the fourth inning and recorded eight strikeouts. MBU didn't produce much offensively either, but did plate the game's only run in the sixth inning. Amanda Williams delivered a huge two-out double to score Chessor, who also doubled one batter earlier.

MBU also nearly extended its lead in the seventh, but had a runner thrown out at the plate. It wouldn't matter however, due to the dominant right arm of the Evansville, Ind. native. Shelby Poropat, Chloe Jennings and Williams all recorded multi-hit games in the 1-0 win.

It took one extra inning, but thanks to Chessor's heroics, the Spartans also won 2-1 in the finale. St. John delivered an RBI single off Chessor in the first inning before the junior found her game one groove. She scattered seven hits in the final seven innings and kept CBC off the scoreboard.

Chessor also generated the offense in the final game, striking first in the fourth inning. She doubled with one out and then scored moments later when Williams delivered a single to tie the game at 1-1.

Neither team could find a way to score through seven innings, which meant extra innings. The star of the day, once again took matters into her own hands. In the top of the eighth, Chessor launched a home run over the fence with one out to put MBU ahead 2-1. The righty then worked around a leadoff single in the bottom half to close out the win. She stranded the tying run at third base by inducing a fly out to right to end it.

Overall, Chessor tossed 15 innings of one-run ball and went 3-6 at the dish with two doubles, a home run and three runs scored. The Spartans continue AMC play on Monday afternoon against Harris-Stowe. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
