Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist received two more strong pitching performances in the team's doubleheader split to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College Tuesday afternoon. The staff allowed just four runs and led the team to a 4-2 win, before falling 2-0 in the finale.
The MBU offense struggled to get going most of the day, but had a huge moment in the sixth inning of game one. Payton Anderson launched one over the fence with the bases loaded to put MBU ahead 4-1.
The grand slam scored Adrianna Ross and Chloe Jennings, who singled, and Sierra Thompson, who reached on a walk. The homer was Anderson's fifth of the season and 23rd of her career, bringing the senior just one home run shy of tying the All-Time Record at MBU set by Lauren Scovill.
The timely hit proved to be plenty for Andrea Chessor. The junior impressed inside the circle once again, allowing just three hits and one earned run in seven innings of work. After today, Chessor's only given up five earned runs in her last 54.1 innings pitched.
The Pomeroys got a run back in the bottom half, but were set down in order in the seventh giving the Spartans the 4-2 win. Chloe Jennings led MBU offensively with two hits.
The pitching duo of Stephanie Richardson and Sarah Burnham stymied the MBU offense in game two. The Spartans were held scoreless and limited to just two hits. The Pomeroys managed to scratch two runs across in the third inning on back-to-back two-out RBI singles and carried the 2-0 lead throughout.
Liddick scattered nine hits in the game and worked around trouble all afternoon. The sophomore stranded 12 runners on base in her six innings and her clutch pitching kept the navy and white in the game throughout.
Unfortunately, the offense wasn't able to generate any run support to pull off the doubleheader sweep. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for MBU in the fourth, but they were unable to capitalize. Thompson and Amanda Williams each recorded hits in the loss.
The Spartans return home on Thursday to take on Harris-Stowe for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
