Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – The Spartans dominated Harris-Stowe Thursday afternoon, routing the Hornets 20-0 in game one and 8-0 in the finale. Spartan pitching allowed just two hits all day, while the offense erupted for 28 hits on 25 runs.
Righty Cierra Liddick set the tone early on inside the circle. The sophomore pitched three perfect innings and the offense backed her up with seven runs in the second and 12 more in the third.
Amanda Williams started the scoring with an RBI single up the middle to score Andrea Chessor, who reached on an error to begin the inning. Adrianna Ross and Chloe Jennings followed with back-to-back RBI singles later on that scored three more and put MBU ahead 4-0. Rachel Garcia put the exclamation point on the inning with a three-run blast over the fence to jolt the Spartans ahead 7-0 after two innings.
The next inning saw even more fireworks, as MBU sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 12 times on nine hits. Three straight singles started the inning and then Ross followed suit with a single of her own that plated Elder and put MBU ahead 8-0. Jennings followed with a bases-clearing double that scored three more and extended the lead to 11.
Three more runs were added in the middle of the inning before Deanna Peters and Ross closed things out. Peters came through with a two-RBI double and Ross added the final three runs when she homered to dead center field and put MBU ahead 19-0. Williams added the final run in the fourth inning on an RBI double to score Payton Anderson.
Jolyn Lake tossed two scoreless innings in game one to close things out. She followed suit in game two, closing out the 8-0 victory for Chessor, the MBU starter. Chessor tossed three innings of one-hit ball and her offense backed her up with seven runs in the first two innings.
Anderson ripped an RBI single to center to begin things in game two and put MBU ahead 1-0. Ross moved up to the cleanup spot and followed right behind with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
The Spartans added upon their 3-0 lead in the second, all with two outs. Ross singled and stole second, while Garcia scurried home in the process. Williams, Shelby Poropat and Pam Diaz all followed with singles that brought home three more runs and put the Spartans in front 7-0.
The Hornets held MBU scoreless in the next two innings, but the Spartans broke out of their slump in the fifth. Jenny Sparks reached on an error and Sierra Thompson followed with a walk. Both advanced on a wild pitch and Jennings brought home Sparks with a sacrifice fly to end the game.
The RBI gave MBU eight runs through five innings, which put the mercy rule into effect. Ross went 5-5 on the day with six RBI's to lead the team offensively. Jennings, Garcia, Williams and Peters all also had 3+ hits on the day.
The Spartans (25-17, 11-5) now hit the road this weekend to face Park and William Woods. First pitch tomorrow against Park is set for 2:00 pm.
