Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOX] The Spartans finished off a strong home weekend with a pair of one-run victories over No. 18 Freed-Hardeman Saturday afternoon. MBU held on to a 3-2 win in game one before coming from behind and topping the Lions 2-1 in the finale.
Peyton Anderson launched her fourth home run of the season in the first to put the Spartans out in front 2-0 early. Anderson had a terrific day at the dish, finishing 4-4 on the day with two walks. She helped MBU (18-14, 7-3) win its third game of the weekend and complete a huge sweep of the Lions. The two-out homer plated Chloe Jennings who led off the inning with a single.
Andrea Chessor continued to impress on the mound after tossing 8.2 scoreless inning on Friday. She scattered 11 hits and pitch around trouble all afternoon. The Lions got to her for one run in the third when Allie Carpenter singled in a run, but the Spartans got the run back in the fourth.
Anderson led off the inning with a single and her pinch runner, Sarah Strothkamp, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a groundout. Shelby Poropat then delivered a huge two-out RBI single to score Strothkamp and give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
The insurance run proved to be crucial. Carpenter reached second on an error to lead off the inning and later scored with two outs to cut the lead to 3-2. Savannah Decker also singled to put the tying run at second base for Kristen Hunsicker. However, Chessor buckled down and got Hunsicker to pop out to Pam Diaz at third base to end the game.
The second game was also decided by a single run, but this time Freed-Hardeman scored first. They struck in the first inning off a sacrifice fly from Carpenter to make it 1-0 early on. The score would stay that way until the fifth inning when MBU added two runs.
Cierra Liddick stranded the bases loaded in the top of the inning and the Spartans quickly rewarded her for it in the bottom half. Jennings singled to start the rally and Rachel Garcia also reached on a fielder's choice to put two runners on with one out. Anderson followed with a single to load the bases for Chessor. Chessor grounded out, but then Poropat delivered another huge two-out RBI. She brought home both Garcia and Anderson with a 2-RBI single into the gap. The hit put the Spartans ahead 2-1 and they never looked back.
Liddick tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning to pick up the win and secure a huge sweep of Freed-Hardeman. The Spartans won three of four over the weekend against the top two teams in the AMC and will now have a day off before taking on Missouri Valley College on Monday. First pitch from the road is set for 2:00 pm.
