Box Score ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] A back-and-forth game two of AMC Tournament action between Missouri Baptist and No. 24 Park University ended 9-6 in the Pirates favor after a three-run eighth inning propelled the host team to victory.
The extra-inning loss ended the Spartans (28-25, 14-10) season. Park (29-13, 17-7) advanced to the semifinals with the win. They have now won 10 straight games after earning the 2-0 series sweep.
This game, which began on Friday, picked up in the bottom of the fourth inning with MBU leading 3-2. The Spartans erased an early 2-0 Park lead with a three-run third inning. Pam Diaz singled home Sarah Strothkamp, who reached on an error, to cut the deficit in half with one out. Amanda Williams then gave MBU the lead with a two-out double to score Diaz and Chloe Jennings.
The Spartans, who were the home team in this game, held Park scoreless in the top of the fourth inning before rain suspended play. The game resumed this afternoon at Excelsior Springs High School in the bottom of the fourth inning. MBU advanced a runner to third in the inning, but heading into the fifth the score remained 3-2.
The Pirates' bats awoke when they came to the plate for the first time on Saturday. They scored four runs on five hits in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead. Back-to-back singles from Hailey Costello and Justice Scales gave Park the lead and they did the rest of their damage with two outs. RBI base hits from Brittanee Willard and Brooke Kunkel added two more runs and gave the Pirates a lead and momentum.
Both teams went down quietly in the next two half-innings before the Spartans responded with a huge sixth inning to tie the game. The rally started with a walk to Williams. Rachel Garcia and Andrea Chessor followed with back-to-back singles, the latter being an RBI hit to score her.
With runners and the corners and two away, Chloe Jennings delivered a huge hit to tie the game at 6-6. She hit a bases-clearing double into the gap to score both Garcia and pinch-runner Jolyn Lake that evened the score.
Neither team scored in the seventh sending the game to extra innings. The offense came through for Park in the eighth, scoring three times on four hits to lead by the eventual final 9-6. MBU then went down in order 1-2-3 in the bottom half to end the game.
Allie Reynolds picked up the win after tossing all eight innings. Diaz, Williams, Chessor, Garcia, Anderson and Jennings all picked up hits for MBU. The game was the final one for the Spartans four seniors: Payton Anderson, Amanda Williams, Deanna Peters and Sierra Thompson.
