SPARTANS SWEEP STEPHENS TO OPEN CONFERENCE PLAY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [GAME 1 BOX] [GAME 2 BOX] Missouri Baptist opened conference play Friday afternoon with a sweep of Stephens College. The Spartans put together a solid performance in all three phases of the game, winning 5-2 and 3-0.

Andrea Chessor was inside the circle for MBU (7-7, 2-0 AMC) in both games and her offense backed her up, especially in game one. The Spartans scored five runs on 10 hits in the win.

Jordan Corby started things offensively with a solo home run in the first inning. The blast was Corby's first on the year and put MBU ahead 1-0. The navy and white weren't done however. Chessor doubled the very next at-bat and advanced to third on an error. Two batters later, Emily Robinson brought her home with a big two-out single to make it 2-0.

Chessor didn't have to work around much trouble, but did in the first and third inning. After the first two batters reached, she retired the Stars (7-13, 0-4 AMC) in order in the first. Chessor also stranded the bases loaded in the third after striking out Amanda Diaz.

Kayla Thoron delivered a clutch two-out RBI double in the third inning to put the Spartans ahead 3-0. The run proved critical after Stephens tagged Chessor for two runs on four hits in the fifth to get within a single run.

However, more insurance came in the bottom half of the sixth. Corby again delivered, this time with the bases loaded, to score Pam Diaz and Macey Wienstroer after a single. The Spartans would hold on by that same 5-2 final margin. Thoron, Chessor and Corby all recorded multi-hit games in the win. Chessor scattered eight hits and two runs over the seven innings.

A three-run fourth inning helped give the Spartans the sweep. Thoron started the rally with an infield single. Robinson sacrificed her to second right before a string of three straight hits. First, Meagan Elder doubled in the left center gap to push Thoron to third. Then, Kaylee Schrand went the opposite way into the gap to plate them both with a double. Rachel Galbraith put the Spartans up 3-0 when she also doubled to score Schrand.

The three runs of support were plenty for Chessor, who also pitched game two. In the finale, she allowed just four hits and pitched a shutout. Stephens doubled to start the seventh inning, but from there Chessor retired the opposing team in order to earn the win and the sweep.

Thoron and Schrand each went 2-3 in game two, with Schrand picking up two RBI's. The Spartans will look to stay hot tomorrow against AMC opponent Columbia. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm. Live audio is available on SpartanDigitalNetwork.com.
