SPARTANS RALLY FOR WIN, SPLIT WITH PIRATES

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE 1] [BOX SCORE 2] Missouri Baptist rallied for a come-from-behind win in game one before settling for a doubleheader split with Park (Mo.) Friday afternoon. The Spartans took game one 3-2 in eight innings and the Pirates won the finale 5-0.

The Spartans (11-13, 3-5 AMC) found themselves down 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh in game one. Park hurler Shelby Bendure had kept MBU off the scoreboard through the first six. The Spartans had base runners in scoring position in the sixth, but couldn't come through. They did, however, in the seventh.

Rachel Galbraith started the rally with a single to left. Pam Diaz was then hit by a pitch and Caitlin McNiff bunted both into scoring position. Spartan shortstop Jordan Corby followed with a huge two-RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

Andrea Chessor pitched around a two-out double in the top of the eighth to keep the game scoreless. Chessor picked up her ninth win on the year after allowing just one earned run and eight hits in eight innings.

In the bottom half, Kayla Thoron walked with one out and was pinch ran for by Madison Bond. Bond advanced to second when Emily Robinson singled and moved to third after a passed ball. With Galbraith the batter, the pitcher Bendure made a throwing error, allowing Bond to score and the Spartans to win in come-from-behind fashion 3-2.

Eight different Spartans recorded hits in the game. Park recorded its runs in the second and fifth inning. Brooke Kunkel finished the game 2-for-3.

Park (7-14, 4-6 AMC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two. Chessor, the Spartan ace, went out to start game two as well, but didn't have her typical stuff. The Pirates scored four times on six hits in the inning to put MBU in a hole.

Though the Spartans were unable to get on the scoreboard in the finale, righty Delissa Dennison pitched excellent in relief. The freshman allowed just one hit and zero earned runs in 6.1 innings of work, while striking out four.

She kept the Spartans in it, and they certainly had chances to get back in the game. MBU had a runner reach base in every inning, including a bases-loaded opportunity in the fourth. Scotlin Hurley tossed a shutout for Park after allowing six hits in seven innings.

Thoron and Meagan Elder each picked up two hits in the loss. The Spartans will be back at it tomorrow afternoon against William Woods. First pitch from Chesterfield Athletic Complex (Field 4) is set for 1:00pm.
