Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [BOX GAME 1] [BOX GAME 2] The Spartans split with NCAA Division II Quincy University on Wednesday. MBU used a three-run first inning to take game one 3-1 before falling 11-4 in game two.
Andrea Chessor pitched another gem against the Hawks to lead MBU to the game one victory. The senior allowed just one earned run and four hits in seven innings of work. The Spartan offense backed her up in the first inning with three runs and led throughout.
Caitlin McNiff opened the game with a double to right center. Jordan Corby also singled and later stole second to put runners on second and third. With one out, Meagan Elder drove home Mcniff with an RBI single. Kayla Thoron gave MBU with a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to score Corby. The third and final run of the inning scored when Emily Robinson delivered an RBI single.
The three-run first was all the help Chessor would need. Outside of a run in the seventh, Chessor kept Quincy off the scoreboard. She didn't allow a runner past second base until that final inning. Robinson led the way offensively with a 2-3 performance.
MBU also got off to a fast start in game two. Thoron walked with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. She later scored when Elder reached on a fielder's choice. Chessor later put MBU ahead 2-0 when she doubled home Robinson, who walked earlier in the inning.
Quincy answered right back to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning, but the Spartans went back on top in the second. Macey Wienstroer walked to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Kelsey Dotson. She later advanced to third on a groundout and gave MBU the lead after a wild pitch.
With the game tied 3-3 in the sixth, a walk to Jordan Corby loaded the bases with nobody out. Thoron followed with a groundout to give the Spartans the lead back 4-3. The score stood this way until an eight-run sixth inning broke the game open. The Hawks scored eight times on eight hits and were helped by two errors from the Spartans.
Five Hawks had multi-hit games. Meanwhile, the Spartans were able to score four times despite only two hits. MBU is back in action on Friday at Hannibal-LaGrange. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
