Box Score 3 ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE 1] [BOX SCORE 2] [BOX SCORE 3] Missouri Baptist Softball ended the final day of the Gulf Coast Invitational strong. The Spartans opened with two wins before falling by a lone run in the Bronze bracket final.
MBU opened the day with a 2-1 win over Faulkner. Andrea Chessor picked up the win after allowing just one earned run and five hits in seven innings of work. Pam Diaz hit an RBI groundout in the top of the second to help MBU strike first. Meagan Elder started the inning with a leadoff walk and was bunted over to second.
Faulkner tied the game in the next half inning, but MBU eventually went back on top. Elder, Diaz and Emily Robinson all singled in the sixth inning, with Diaz's hit bringing home the eventual winning run. Chessor retired Faulkner in order in the seventh.
The Spartans carried that momentum to a 5-2 win over Concordia (Mich.). MBU scored all five runs in the final three innings to come back from a 2-0 deficit. Meghan Mollett cut the deficit in half when she went deep for her first home run as a Spartan.
MBU continued the offensive prowess with two runs in the next two innings. Caitlin McNiff also left the yard, tying the game in the sixth with a solo homer to run the score even at 2-2. The Spartans took the lead later in the inning after Kelsey Dotson, pinch running for Chessor, scored on an error.
Another Concordia error helped the Spartans tack on an insurance run in the seventh and the other scored when Jordan Corby came through with an RBI sac fly. Delissa Dennison pitched outstanding in the win, allowing one earned run on five hits in seven innings.
The Bronze Bracket final featured a rematch with Coastal Georgia. The Spartans were held scoreless through six innings, but didn't go down without a fight. Stephanie Worth delivered a huge two-RBI double to get MBU within a run at 3-2. That's as close as they would get however.
Chessor had another strong game inside the circle, allowing just one earned run in seven innings of work and five hits. MBU will play its home opener Wednesday against Evangel University. First pitch of the double header is set for 1:00pm.
