Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS – [BOX GAME 1] [BOX GAME 2] Game one between Missouri Baptist and Central Baptist took much longer than expected, but for Spartans fans it was worth the wait. MBU won a lightning-lengthened game 3-2 before the Mustangs earned the split with a 2-0 win.
All five runs were recorded in the second inning of game one. Central Baptist jumped out to the early 1-0 lead when Raquel Westerman homered to left center. Cali Lankford followed with a double and one batter later, Caley Perry traded places with her to up the Mustang lead to 2-0.
An error sparked the Spartan rally in the bottom half. Tori Beachum reached on an error by the first baseman and three hits followed. Andrea Chessor doubled in the gap to put two runs in scoring position. Rachel Galbraith grounded out to plate Beachum before Megan Mollett tied the game.
Mollett went the opposite way as well, singling home the pinch-runner Kelsey Dotson to knot the game at 2-2. Pam Diaz kept the hit parade going with double to centerfield to put MBU on top for good 3-2.
Chessor took care of the rest inside the circle. The Mustangs had a runner reach second base in both the fourth and the sixth. Each time, Chessor pitched out of it. She went all seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs to pick up the win.
Multiple lightning delays caused game one to finish roughly five hours after its start, but the final result was a 3-2 Spartan win. Both Chessor and Diaz recorded multi-hit games.
Alyssa Estrada led off game two with a triple to set the tone for CBC. She scored immediately after when Lankford grounded out back to the pitcher. Estrada slid under the throw home from first base.
Chessor pitched in game two as well, and did so in impressive fashion outside of a fourth inning home run from Kaylee St. John. Her final line was seven innings, four hits and two earned runs.
The Missouri Baptist offense just couldn't get anything going in the second game. MBU had a base runner in each of the last six innings. Its best chance came in the fifth when they stranded runners at first and third. Diaz picked up her third hit of the day to lead off the seventh, but Rachel Lawson shut the door.
Lawson led CBC to the 2-0 win after allowing six hits and no runs in seven innings. Jordan Corby went 2-4 in the loss. The Spartans are back at it tomorrow afternoon against St. Louis College of Pharmacy. First pitch from Spartan Field is set for 3:00pm.
