SPARTANS DROP TWO TO LYON

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE 1] [BOX SCORE 2] Missouri Baptist fell in both games to Lyon College Monday afternoon. The Scots stayed in the AMC Playoff hunt with 10-1 and 3-2 wins.

MBU (18-20, 10-12 AMC) fell behind early in both games and couldn't string together enough hits to take a lead. The Spartans have one more conference series to go, facing Lindenwood-Belleville on Wednesday. Lyon (23-24, 11-13 AMC) ended its conference portion with the sweep. The two teams and Hannibal-Lagrange (9-9 AMC) are currently in the hunt of the final two playoff spots.

Lyon took advantage of two MBU errors to take an early 1-0 lead after one inning and added one more in the fourth. The road team then broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Rachel Norman started the rally with a leadoff triple and Cheyenne Black followed with a double. In total, LC recorded six hits, including three that went for extra bases. They led 7-0 after the top of the fifth.

Amber Mobbs singled home Pam Diaz, who doubled to start the inning, in the bottom half. Mobbs went 2-3 in game one and finished the day with a 4-7 performance. Despite the run, Lyon added three more runs in the sixth. Kaylee Schrand tripled in the bottom of the sixth, but the game ended an inning early after six were complete with a 10-1 score.

Nicole Sanders picked up the win after allowing five hits and one run in six innings. Kaitlyn Guevara went 3-4 to lead the way for Lyon.

Game two was much closer than the first. Delissa Dennison went pitch-for-pitch with Sanders in the second game throughout.

Black put the first run on the board with a solo home run in the third inning to give Lyon a 1-0 lead. Black also scored in the sixth when she singled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly from Allie Lewis.

MBU erased the 2-0 deficit in the bottom half. Mobbs started the rally with a one-out single. Jordan Corby and Meagan Elder also singled, to load the bases. The next batter, Andrea Chessor, hit the ball to short and an errant throw to third allowed a run to score without an out recorded.

Rachel Galbraith fouled out in foul territory in her at-bat, but heads-up base running from Corby knotted the game at 2-2. She tagged up from third base and all of a sudden we had a brand-new ballgame. Neither team scored until the top of the ninth when Sanders delivered a two-out single to score Norman and give Lyon the lead back at 3-2. Norman started the rally with a two-out double and an intentional walk followed before the big hit.

Diaz doubled with one-out in the bottom half, but she ended the game at second base. Sanders picked up the win again, allowing six hits and two runs in nine innings. Dennison allowed just two earned runs in her nine innings of work.

Mobbs and Elder both had multi-hit games in the loss. The Spartans next play on Wednesday at Lindenwood-Belleville. First pitch is set for 4:00pm.
