ST. LOUIS – No. 21 Missouri Baptist University served up 14 aces in a sweep of Peru State College on Saturday to claim its 15th consecutive set win. The Spartans pushed their sweep streak to five games and improved their overall record to 20-5 overall and 12-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with a 25-8, 25-20, 25-17 victory.
Led by six from
Gabi Jakubowska and four aces from
Tiia Heikkinen, MBU had 12 more aces than PSC while hitting .245 and holding them to .012 with six blocks.
Allana Capella led the attack for the Spartans with 11 kills on .360 hitting and nine digs. Fernana Perini had nine kills and six blocks, while Jakubowska also chipped in eight kills and five digs.
MBU opened set one with a .263 percentage and a dominant 25-8 win. Jakubowska had four aces in the set while
Mary Potteiger had three. The Bobcats struggled on offense with a -0.190 percentage and were denied four times by Perini.
The Spartans dominated for a majority of the second set, pushing PSC to the brink at 24-16 before they rattled off a 4-0 run. A service error from the Bobcats ended the comeback bid. Capella had seven kills in the frame, and Heikkinen added three aces to the team total.
In the final set, a kill by
Summer McDonough gave the Spartans breathing room, followed by a kill and a service ace from Jakubowska. A 6-1 mid-set run gave MBU more separation before Capella sent down
Valentina Navarro's 25th assist of the afternoon to end the sweep and the frame 25-17.
