MBU Basketball’s Mariana Cubero Named to Costa Rica Senior National Team

Missouri Baptist University guard Mariana Cubero has been selected to represent Costa Rica's Senior National team, under the Federación Costarricense de Baloncesto (FECOBA), which was announced on Wednesday, July 16. The team will compete in the COCABA Women's Championship 2025, which begins on Tuesday, July 22, at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello in Managua, Nicaragua.

Cubero, a standout on the MBU women's basketball team, has consistently demonstrated excellence both on and off the court. During the 2024–25 season, she led the Spartans with 225 rebounds (7.8 RPG), earned Academic All-Conference honors, and was named American Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week on November 18, 2024

Her selection to the Costa Rican national team is a testament to her hard work, leadership, and potential. Cubero previously represented Costa Rica in youth competitions, including the 2018 COCABA U14 Women's Championship, where her team took first, and the 2021 Centrobasket Women's Championship, where she averaged 4.5 points per game.

"Mariana's selection to the Costa Rica senior national team is a tremendous honor—not just for her, but for Missouri Baptist University as a whole," said MBU Director of Athletics Jeff Fore. "She embodies the values we strive to instill in all our student-athletes: excellence, integrity, and a commitment to growth on and off the court. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to watching her represent her country with the same passion and determination she's shown here at MBU."

The COCABA Women's Championship 2025 will award three spots to the Centrobasket Women's Championship in 2026. During the Group Phase, each team will face the other teams in its group. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals (1st in Group A vs. 2nd in Group B; 1st in Group B vs. 2nd in Group A). The remaining teams will compete for 5th through 7th place. The semifinal winners will play for the gold medal, while the losers will compete for bronze.

Cubero and the Costa Rica Senior Women's National Team begin their tournament run on Tuesday with an 8:30 p.m. (CT) game time against Nicaragua. Costa Rica is 2-0 all-time against Nicaragua, with their last win coming on July 23, 2023, with a final score of 79-61.
