Johnson Selected to First Career Heart Softball Player of the Week Award

The Heart of America Athletic Conference announced Monday that Missouri Baptist University shortstop Makayla Johnson has been named the Player of the Week after a dominant five-game stretch for No. 16 Missouri Baptist University softball.

Johnson powered Missouri Baptist University to a 3-2 week at the NAIA Softball Invitational, hitting .667 (10-for-15) with eight runs scored and four RBIs while posting a .762 on-base percentage and a .933 slugging percentage.

The Londell, Mo., native opened the week with a 2-for-2 performance against No. 1 Southern Oregon University, driving in a run and drawing three walks. She followed with a 3-for-4 effort against No. 11 Midland University, scoring twice and adding an RBI.

Johnson continued her consistency at the plate on Feb. 21, collecting two hits, including a triple, and scoring a run against Ottawa University (Kan.) before adding another hit and run scored later that day versus No. 9 University of Science and Arts (Okla.). She closed the week with a 2-for-4 showing against No. 21 Hope International University, scoring three runs and driving in two.

In addition to her production at the plate, Johnson was steady defensively at shortstop, totaling 19 assists and six putouts with just one error across five games.

MBU will continue its schedule at the Space Coast Games in Melbourne, Fla., on Monday, March 2. They open play against the University of Michigan-Dearborn at 1:30 p.m. (CST).
