ST. LOUIS - Missouri Baptist University women's lacrosse used a dominant second quarter to pull away and secure a 15-8 road win over Georgetown College on Wednesday afternoon.
After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Spartans found themselves trailing 4-2 late in the first quarter before flipping the momentum in a big way. MBU erupted for seven goals in the second period, turning a two-goal deficit into a 9-6 halftime advantage and never looked back.
Delaney Pechnik led the offensive surge, finishing with six goals on eight shots. She scored key goals during the second-quarter run, including a man-down score and a free-position conversion that helped break the game open.
Sophia Rose and Marissa Oldham provided a strong one-two punch as well, each tallying three goals. Rose added three assists for six points, while Oldham contributed five points with two assists. The pair played a major role in Missouri Baptist's ball movement, as the Spartans totaled eight assists on 15 goals.
Missouri Baptist continued to build its lead in the third quarter, holding Georgetown scoreless while adding three more goals to extend the margin to 12-6. The defense tightened throughout the second half, limiting quality opportunities and forcing key stops.
Goalkeeper Rachel Livak anchored the defensive effort with 13 saves, including six in the third quarter alone, helping preserve the Spartans' momentum.
The Spartans outshot Georgetown 32-28 and held advantages in ground balls (17-13) and caused turnovers, while also converting their lone free-position opportunity.
Missouri Baptist closed out the game with three fourth-quarter goals, including a late strike from Alexis Taylor, to seal the 15-8 victory.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-3 on the season and will continue play next Tuesday, March 24.
