Alohilani Bursey and
Kaylie Brake swept the Heart of America Athletic Conference softball weekly awards on Monday after leading No. 15 Missouri Baptist University softball to a 6-0 record at the Space Coast Games in Melbourne, Fla.
Bursey, a junior outfielder from St. Clair, Mo., went 12-for-19 (.632) with four extra base hits, including two doubles. She drove in 14 runs over the six games and scored six runs.
She opened the tournament with a three-RBI performance in a win over the University of Michigan-Dearborn and followed up with three hits and three RBI on day two against No. 18 St. Thomas University (Fla.) and No. 5 Marian University (Ind.).
Her biggest performance came against Ave Maria University on March 6. Bursey collected three hits, two home runs, and seven RBI while scoring two runs and earning a walk.
In the circle, Brake was dominant for MBU, posting three complete-game victories in three starts with a 0.98 earned run average.
In her first start on March 3 against No. 18 STU, she went all five innings in a run-rule win with one earned run, two hits allowed, and three strikeouts. She followed up with complete game wins over Huntington University (Ind.) and the University of Saint Francis (Ind.), allowing one earned run combined between the two games.
Bursey, Brake, and the Spartans continue the season on Wednesday, March 11, at Columbia College. The first pitch in Columbia, Mo., is set for 2 p.m.
