ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Coming off a game where the team shot just 24 percent from the floor, Missouri Baptist looked much better early, but couldn't keep-up with the high-powered College of the Ozarks Bobcats' offense as the Spartans were downed 57-81 on the road.
Missouri Baptist (2-7) started the game completely different that it did just one day prior. Junior Kristyne Smyth led the attack early for the team, posting seven points in just over five minutes to help her team to an eight-point advantage.
The Bobcats returned the favor over the remainder of the half. It took College of the Ozarks just three minutes to erase the eight-point advantage and tie the game with 9:30 remaining. From this point, the lead changed five times, but toward the end of the half, the home team pulled away building a 33-25 lead entering the break.
After the half, it was all Bobcats. Though Missouri Baptist slightly improved its shooting percentage, College of the Ozarks made waves from three-point range. The team went from an 0-7 mark in the first half to go 6-9 in the second half, which was the difference.
As a team, College of the Ozarks shot 45 percent for the game and 50 percent in the second half. It was the free throw shooting, however, that may have made the biggest difference. The Bobcats were nearly perfect in limited attempts, going 9-10 for the game from the foul stripe. Missouri Baptist went 10-15 for the game.
For the Bobcats, three players ended the day in double-figures. Kayla Kepler (12 points) and Wren Wiebe (10 points) combined for 22 points, but the star of the game was forward Morgan Smith. The 6' senior from Nixa, Mo. finished the day with 24 points and nine rebounds, leading all scorers.
Missouri Baptist was led by Lauren Taylor. The senior recorded 15 points on the day. She was followed by Kristyne Smyth (14 points) and Mandy Kirby (12 points).
MBU will now look to Wednesday's game against McKendree to turn-around the four-game losing streak. First tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at in Lebanon, Ill.
