ST. LOUIS – Jasmine Jackson put the Missouri Baptist women's basketball team on her back Saturday afternoon and led the Spartans to a 58-39 over the visiting Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans. With the victory, the Spartans end a four game losing streak and move to 7-14 on the season and 4-5 in the American Midwest Conference.
Jackson had her first double-double of the year scoring a game high 17 points and bringing down 15 rebounds. She also added three steals in the game.
The Trojans scored the first basket of the game and that was the only lead they would hold in the game. Missouri Baptist went on a 14-1 run to take a 14-3 lead just seven minutes into the ballgame. MBU looked to put the Trojans down early and often.
The Spartans shot 43 percent in the first half, while the Trojans only shot 18 percent. MBU had a 19 point, 31-12 lead at the half.
The second half started out much differently for MBU. Hannibal came out clicking on all cylinders and worked the Spartans lead down to only nine with just over 12 minutes left to play in the game.
The Spartans had 10 turnovers in the second half compared to only seven in the first half. The Trojans kept fighting and seemed to hit the shots when MBU struggled. Before the Spartans knew it, their lead was down to five with 7:53 to play in the game.
Missouri Baptist said enough was enough and went on a 16-2 run to close out the game, 58-39. The Spartans managed to let the game get down to only a five point difference, but worked it back out to the same 19 point lead that they held at halftime.
MBU had two other players in double figures on the day. Kristyne Smyth had 12 points and Lauren Taylor had 10 points.
The Spartans look to make it two wins in a row Thursday Jan. 31 as the Park Pirates come to St. Louis. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
