ST. LOUIS – On a day that was supposed to be filled with the men's volleyball Spartan Invitational, St. Louis was filled with snow and ice that changed the plans of the teams in route to Missouri Baptist. Only the number 10-ranked Graceland Yellowjackets were able to make it and took on the Spartans in a single game contest. The number 4-ranked MBU took care of business against the visiting Yellowjackets winning 3-0.
In the first set, the Spartans came out strong. MBU had a .240 attack percentage and held Graceland to only a .067 hitting percentage. Missouri Baptist took set one 25-21.
The second set started out rough for MBU. The Yellowjackets jumped out to a 7-1 lead forcing head coach John Yehling to call a timeout which proved to be just the perfect time. After the timeout, the Spartans went on a 7-0 run to take an 8-7 lead and forcing Graceland to call a timeout. Missouri Baptist took control of the game from that point and eventually took set two, 25-19.
The Spartans came out ready to put the match away in the third set. MBU built a slim 10-8 leading before the Yellowjackets called a timeout and tried to change their luck. This did not seem to work as MBU seemed to be too much for Graceland, but the Yellowjackets fought hard to the end. MBU took set three, 25-21 and won the match 3-0.
Missouri Baptist moves to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in the MAMVIC West. Next weekend the Spartans travel to Davenport, Iowa to compete in the St. Ambrose Tournament. The first match for MBU is set for Friday, March 1 at 8:00 p.m. against St. Ambrose.
