IRVINE, Calif. – The Missouri Baptist men's volleyball team split a pair of games on Saturday in California with a win against non-conference opponent Johnson and Whales University and a loss against Concordia University Irvine.Â
MBU dominated Johnson and Whales right out of the gate with a set one win 25-19. Then in the second set the team looked to continue their powerful offense and they would win 25-19. The third set would be the best set of the match for the team as they would beat Johnson and Whales 25-14 and win the match. Danny Traylor and Gustavo Cintron led the way offensively with 13 kills each.
The second match for MBU would be against the third-ranked Concordia University in their home gym. The Spartans would come out very strong in the match winning the first two sets and killing any momentum the Eagles had. The third set started the same way with the Spartans building a 17-11 lead, but Concordia came storming back taking the set 28-26.
The fourth set was all Concordia as they defeated the Spartans 25-22. The fifth set was also all Concordia and took the match 3-2 (25-19, 25-21, 26-28, 22-25, 11-15). Gustavo Cintron had 16 kills and Jordan Pinto added 13 kills with a .455 hitting percentage. The team had a .336 hitting percentage and held Concordia to a .306 hitting percentage.
MBU moves to 14-4 on the season and 6-1 in the MAMVIC West. The Spartans have a busy week ahead and they start it off against NCAA DII rival Lindenwood on Tuesday, March 19th. First serve is scheduled at 7:00 p.m.
