ST. LOUIS – The Missouri Baptist women's basketball team trailed by just eight at the half, but Lyon took control of the second half and won the contest, 68-47. The loss drops the Spartans to 8-18 and 6-12 in American Midwest Conference play.
The Spartans shot 35 percent from the field, making 17-of-48 shots. The Spartans made 10-of-12 free throw attempts, three blocks and four steals.
Lyon (19-7, 15-3 AMC) made 21-of-54 (39 percent) shots from the floor. The Scots hit 8-of-20 shots from three-point territory, and won the rebounding battle, 36-33.
Angela Talley led the Spartans with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. She drained both three-point attempts and made both free throw shots.
Kristyne Smyth had 12 points, hitting 4-of-15 shots from the field. She made 3-of-4 from the line, dished out four assists, and had one block.
Jasmine Jackson led the Spartans with nine rebounds. She also scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor.
In the first half, Smyth drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 15-9 with 11:39 left in the half, but the Scots took over from there.
Lyon went on a 12-0 run over the next 5:30 to take its biggest lead of the half, 27-9.
Missouri Baptist had no plans of throwing in the towel, and went on a monstrous run. The Spartans scored 14 straight points over a span of 3:30, which cut the deficit to just four points, 27-23. Four MBU players scored during the run: Smyth 5 points, Jackson 4 points, Danna Jenkins 3 points, and Morgan Settle 2 points.
The Spartans had a chance to shrink the deficit even more, but missed the next two shots.
Lyon was able to regain composure to score the final four points of the half, and head into the locker room with a 31-23 lead.
Smyth scored all 12 of her points in the half to lead MBU in scoring. The Spartans shot 39 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes, hitting 9-of-23 shots.
The second half was less eventful, as the Scots quickly built up a lead to 20 points that the Spartans were unable to recover from.
Angela Talley led the Spartans in the second half with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting. She drained both of her three-pointers in the game during the final 20 minutes. MBU shot 32 percent from the field in the second half, making 8-of-25 shots.
The Spartans take to the road once again, as they travel to Harris-Stowe on Saturday. The Spartans were shocked by the Hornets in the first meeting, 76-75. Game time is set for 2 pm.
