ST.LOUIS-- Missouri Baptist completed play in the Spartan Invitational today, ending the tournament with four victories and zero loses. Today, the Spartans picked up victories against Emmanuel College and Cardinal Stritch University.
MBU took the court this morning to face Emmanuel College in the first match. The Spartans had two dominating sets, winning 25-18 and 25-9 before going on to lose set three 25-23. After the third set loss, the Spartans pulled out a set four win, 25-18.
Once again, Mico Janicijevic led the Spartans. The freshman added 14 kills, while Clayton Baker chipped in 13 of his own. Junior Kevin Knight added 12 kills and 4 blocks. Davardo Rolle came up big for the Spartans again today. The middle blocker added 11 kills with zero errors, hitting a .733. Senior Robert Esser contributed with 52 assists, averaging 13 assists per game. The Spartans out-blocked the Lions, 12.5 to 8. MBU managed to keep Emmanuel's attacking percentage to .009 while the Spartans attacked at a .322.
The second match had similar results to the first. MBU won set one 25-21. The tables turned the second set, however, as Cardinal Stritch pulled out a win 25-21. The Spartans then went on to close out the match in consecutive sets, both 25-17.
While Janicijevic contributed 14 kills, Baker 12, and Rolle 10, the Spartans' opposite hitter stepped up in the second match of the day. Sean Bennedict went 12 for 16, hitting an impressive .750. He also added two of the Spartans 10 blocks. Danny Gruszczyk led MBU in digs with 13. Jimmy Torromeo led the Wolves. He added 10 of Cardinal Stritch's 42 kills, while chipping in seven digs. The Spartans outhit the Wolves .437 to .212. They also outblocked CSU 10 to 5.
The Spartans closed out the Invitational 4-0, and improved to 14-2 on the season. MBU returns to the court Tuesday in St. Charles, Mo. as they take on the Lions of Lindenwood University. First serve is set for 7pm.
