SPARTAN DEFENSE COMES-UP BIG AGAINST WILLIAMS BAPTIST

ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCOREMissouri Baptist women's basketball forced 22 Williams Baptist Eagles' turnovers on Thursday night en-route to a 61-56 win in American Midwest Conference play.

Missouri Baptist (6-12, 6-8 AMC) looked strong on the defensive side of the ball, though it struggled offensively throughout. The Spartans committed just 14 turnovers in the game and posted three blocked shots (all by Morgan Settle) in the home victory.

The Spartans carried a three-point, 26-23 lead into the half and were able to maintain its lead throughout the final 20 minutes of play. Over the course of the season, MBU has shown that when it leads heading into the break, it is a formula for success. With the win, Missouri Baptist improved to 4-1 when leading after the first 20 minutes.

After halftime, the Spartans continued to push the pace of play, though their shooting woes continued in the half and for the third consecutive game. The team shot 36 percent from the floor, but found success with a few key pieces throughout the night.

Jerica Hawkins came one point shy of tying her career-best for the fifth time this season. The junior finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two steals and two assists. She collected her fourth double-double of the season in the process.

Taylor Klingelhoefer also made a sizable impact in her return to the court after a two-game injury-related respite. The O'Fallon, Ill., native posted 15 points, four steals and led all scorers on the night.

Morgan Settle also factored into the win with another big night swatting shots away. The 6-1 forward posted three blocks and upped her season total to 28. Currently, the Moorsville, Ind., native leads the AMC in both Blocks and Blocks per Game.

Da'Monique Brown led the Eagles with 11 points and three steals on the night. Porche Hall chipped in 10 points as well to go along with two blocked shots.

Missouri Baptist will have a short rest before getting back to action on Saturday as the team welcomes the Scots of Lyon College to the friendly confines of the Carl and Deloris Petty Sports and Recreation Complex. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
