ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE RMU] [BOX SCORE STX] Missouri Baptist men's volleyball went undefeated in day one of the Missouri Valley Viking Invitational after they picked-up wins over both No. 9-ranked Robert Morris University and St. Xavier University on Friday.
First up for the Spartans (12-4, 4-0) was No. 9 Robert Morris University. MBU defeated the Eagles in straight sets (25-18, 25-23, 26-24).
Chris Flood led the Spartans against Robert Morris with 14 kills, 4 service aces, and 9 digs. Shane Welchposted a solid 0.588 attack percentage with 11 kills and 17 total attempts and only one error as well as 6 total blocks.
Missouri Baptist took the court for a second time and faced St. Xavier University. The Cougars hung with the Spartans in the first set but were unable to finish as Missouri Baptist closed the match with a 3-0 win (26-24, 25-21, 25-17).
Mico Janicijevic led MBU against the Cougars with 13 kills, 1 service ace, and 5 digs. Pin hitters Josh Comer and Sean Benedict both came up with 11 kills and 4 digs apiece. At the net Alex Navatto and Donald Fleming posted 5 kills and 2 blocks apiece.
Setter Kyle Foley led the way for the Spartan offense through both games. Foley ended the day with 77 assists (37 vs RMU and 40 vs STXU) and averaged 12.83 assists per set.
Missouri Baptist will continue play in the Viking Invitational tomorrow and will take on No. 2-ranked Clarke University and Calumet College of St. Josephs.
