MEN’S VOLLEYBALL WINS SECOND TITLE

ST. LOUIS [BOX SCORE] – The Missouri Baptist men's volleyball team defeated Grand View University (Iowa) 3-0 (38-36, 25-22, 25-22) for the NAIA National Invitational title on Saturday with a capacity crowd.

Set one went back and forth with 30 total ties and 74 total rallies as the teams battled for the lead. Both teams pushed far past twenty five as there were 18 total chances at set point for what is likely an Invitational record. The Spartans came out on top with a 38-36 crucial set one victory.

Grand View took an early lead in the set two but MBU jumped into action to tie the score. The teams continued to battle as Missouri Baptist took the lead after a tie score of 17 and a service ace from Grant Carder. The Spartans furthered that advance to a 25-22 set victory.

The third set much like the second saw an early lead for the Vikings but the Spartans were not far behind in tying the score. With another battle for the lead and a tie score of 21, Missouri Baptist went on a four point run to claim the 2016 NAIA National Invitational Title.

Chris Flood led the offense with 13 kills. Mico Janicijevic and Carder followed with 12 kills apiece.

Kyle Foley quarterbacked the offense with 44 total assists for an average of 14.67 assists per set.

The Spartans remain undefeated on their home court after the win with 24 games.

This is the second title the Spartans have won in just as many years. The team became the second to claim back-to-back titles. The only other team to claim back-to-back titles was California Baptist from 2004-2007.

At the conclusion of the match the teams were presented with their trophies and the All-Tournament team was announce. Foley and Flood were both named to the All-Tournament team from Missouri Baptist. Foley was also named the tournament MVP as head coach John Yehling was named tournament coach of the year.
