Box Score 2 The No.2 ranked Missouri Baptist Women's Volleyball team continued their winning ways on Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep in Miami, Florida.
ST. LOUIS- The matinee got started with a match against the Conquistadors of Florida National University. The Spartans came out of the gate a little slower than expected and Florida National claimed a close first set, 25-23.
After that, however, Missouri Baptist found their groove. As we saw in last weekend's home-opener, when this Spartan squad is on their A-game, they are a force to be reckoned with.
MBU was paced up front by the trio of Tina Medanovic, Marion Couraud, and Cate Cigarini and Florida National had no answers at the net. Missouri Baptist cruised through set two with a 25-12 victory and made similar work of the third set, claiming a 25-14 win. The fourth and final set, although closer on the scoreboard at 25-19, was all Spartans as well.
Medanovic and Cigarini each posted double-digit kills, with 10 and 11 respectively. Couraud chipped in 8 kills and a team leading 28 total attacks. Darby Santos was a key contributor at setter, logging 23 assists.
Mallory Dillon and Natalie Gremaud held firm for Missouri Baptist on the defensive side. Dillon led the Spartans with 18 digs, followed by 12 from her fellow senior, Gremaud.
Head coach Chris Nichols called it a complete team effort, as 13 Spartans found their way onto the stat sheet.
Match number two of the day would prove to be a less stressful task. MBU squared off with Johnson and Wales University and the Spartans flexed their muscles from the outset.
In another complete team effort, Missouri Baptist picked up where they left off in the first match. After a decisive 25-6 opening set victory, the Spartans rolled to 25-10 and 25-11 victories in sets two and three to dispatch a young Wildcats squad.
Freshman Kelly Wilson led the Spartans in kills with 9 and 11 total attacks. Marija Tosic also got on the board with 5 kills and 10 total attacks.
Megan Huffman, the nation's leader in assists heading into Thursday, added to her total with a team-leading 17 helpers.
The No. 2 ranked Spartans improved to 4-0 overall. They will compete in the St. Thomas Invitational tomorrow and Saturday. The action gets started at 1 pm CST, as Missouri Baptist does battle with Indiana Tech. That will be followed by a match with the hosts, St. Thomas University, at 5:00 pm CST.
Both of tomorrow's matches are expected to be streamed on St. Thomas' Official Website. Stay tuned to MBUspartans.com and follow @MBU_Athletics on twitter for more information.
