The Spartans lone blemish in their historic 33-1 2016 season came to the hands of the Quincy Hawks. MBU avenged that loss Friday night with a convincing 3-0 sweep.
A thrilling first set went the Spartans favor 26-24 and MBU (2-1) rode that momentum to victory. A three-point run for MBU turned a 19-17 deficit into a lead, one MBU wouldn't relinquish. Quincy (0-4) tied the match twice, but a service error and a kill from Cameron Hibbler put the road team ahead 1-0. Hibbler had another efficient night with four kills on five total attacks.
Set two was also played evenly until a mini Spartan run. MBU ran off five consecutive points to take a tie game and make it 16-11. Hibbler and Drew Iliff had kills during the stretch. The run was capped by an ace from Ivan Trifunovic. MBU kept at least a two-point cushion the rest of the way. Kyle Foley ended the set at the service line as the Spartans won 25-19. Foley finished the night with 28 assists and three service aces.
Mico Janicijevic sparked a huge rally for MBU in set three. A kill from the senior put the Spartans ahead 5-4 and after six attack errors in seven points, the Spartan lead turned to 13-4. Janicijevic also fittingly ended the night with a kill after posting a team-high 13 on 30 swings. MBU won the set 25-15 to get the sweep.
MBU returns home with a winning record on Tuesday to square off against the Culver-Stockton Wildcats. First serve is set for 7:00 pm. Live coverage can be found on SpartanDigitalNetwork.com.Â
