ST. LOUIS – [BOX SCORE] No. 2 Missouri Baptist erased a two-set deficit to comeback and defeat No. 3 Park 3-2 (22-25, 17-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-11) on the road Tuesday night. MBU secured the Midwest Conference title with the dramatic win.
The Spartans (22-2, 11-1) dug deep in set three. Already trailing 2-0, MBU found itself in a 14-9 deficit midway through. A timeout from head coach John Yehling followed and the comeback trail followed right after.
A kill from freshman Luka Cajic sparked an 11-3 MBU run the rest of the way. The Spartans eventually tied it at 15-15 and went ahead 21-16 after recording six straight points. Cajic came through again with the final three points for MBU with three kills. The freshman recorded a game-high 24 of them on just 40 swings. He finished with an attack percentage of .525.
The Spartans raised their attack percentage in the final three sets and hit .462 in the fourth. With MBU ahead 14-11, setter Kyle Foley spread the ball around to all three main weapons to extend the advantage to 20-14. Cajic, Daniel Prada and Mico Janicijevic all picked up kills during the stretch. Prada finished second on the team with 14 kills, while Janicijevic added 12. Foley averaged 10 assists per set for 50 on the night.
The final three points for MBU came from the freshman Cajic, who picked a good time to play arguably the best match of his young career. His 24 kills shattered his previous season-high of 16 and MBU won set four 25-19.
The momentum followed the navy and white into the deciding set. Park grabbed the first two points, but a kill from Janicijevic put the Spartans on the board. They'd switch sides leading 8-7 after another Cajic kill.
The side change seemed to work well for the Spartans. They'd outscore Park 7-4 the rest of the way to complete the comeback. Three consecutive kills from Janicijevic upped the advantage to 11-8. Fittingly, Cajic posted the match's final point with a kill to give MBU the 15-11 win and end the match.
Janicijevic also added a team-high 12 digs to post a double-double. Foley recorded five kills on six attempts in addition to his 50 assists. The Spartans will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at home against Clarke. The Senior Day match will begin at 11:00am.
