Although Joe originally planned to join the Cadet Program for the St. Louis City Police Department, the Lord had other plans. When the Police Department terminated the Cadet Program the summer after his senior year in high school, Coach Art Siebels recruited Myers to play both basketball and baseball for the Spartans. As a result, Joe played basketball for Coach Siebels (Hall of Fame Recipient 2005) from 1972-1974, and baseball for Coach Chuck Brown (Hall of Fame, Class of 2004) for his first year at Missouri Baptist College,
Joe, who played on the same team with such Spartan greats as Travis Brown and Mike Winkleman (both Hall of Fame recipients), averaged 10 points and nearly 20 assists per game. Overall, in his two years, he recorded over 250 career assists and led the team in minutes played in the 1973-1974 season. Mr. Myers received his BA in Management, and returned to complete a Master's Degree in Education in 2009.
Joe was a successful student-athlete at MBC, but his contribution after his playing days makes him a standout. Myers was instrumental in the development of a sports program for all ages at Tower Grove Baptist Church and the surrounding community. He was also commissioned to head up the high school athletic program, as well as coach the Boy's Varsity Basketball program for 15 years, winning numerous conference titles and three state championships. In 2008, they finished second in the National Basketball Tournament. He was voted by his peers "Coach of the Year" five times. While volunteering for Tower Grove, he coordinated a movement to raise funds and begin a baseball program which saw immediate success, winning conference titles and eventually a State Championship.
Despite a 40-year distinguished career in law enforcement, Joe has selflessly volunteered and coached numerous student-ahletes, inlcuding four years of volunteering to coach the Spartan Men's Junior Varsity Basketball Team (under Coach Ray Farrell).
Presently, Joe is a Group Supervisor for the Drug Enforcement Administration's Diversion Group. Over his career, he has been recognized with honors and achievements, such as Police Chief letters of Commendation, Citations for Exceptional Performance, Meritorious Citation Medal; U.S. Attorney Award for Distinguihsed Service, U.S. Postal Service Distinguished Award, and Drug Enforcement Administration Exceptional Performace Award.
Coach Myers has been married to his lovely wife Linda since 1979. They have two children (Joshua and JoHannah).
