Heavily recruited by some of the top Division I volleyball programs in the country, Swiney landed at Saint Louis University and played two seasons for the Billikens. After deciding that SLU wasn't the school for her, Shannan took a break from volleyball and school to work full-time. Following that two-year hiatus, Swiney eventually enrolled at Missouri Baptist to complete her degree and also found the perfect fit to finish her two remaining years of eligibility.
Swiney remains one of the top setters in program history ranking third all-time in total assists (3,749) in just two seasons of work. Her average assists per match rank No. 1 all-time. With Swiney at setter, the Spartans achieved several firsts including the program's first-ever win over Columbia College, the first trip to the NAIA National Championships and the first AMC Conference Tournament title in 2005.
The two-time All-AMC First Team selection helped guide Missouri Baptist all the way to the NAIA National Championship semifinals in 2005 and a quarterfinal appearance the following year. During that impressive stretch, the Spartans were 75-15 (.833) overall and Swiney significantly contributed to MBU Athletics Hall of Famer Ana Mercado's NAIA National Player of the Year campaign.
Swiney graduated from MBU in 2007 with her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration & Management. She spent 10 years in marketing and financial planning and currently works as Premium Brand Manager for Edwards LTD, a family-owned business. Shannan continually gives back whether it be at her church – Christ Prince of Peace, daughter's elementary school or in the volleyball community when she served as a coach for High Performance Volleyball Club. Shannan Swiney Kellogg is married to her husband, Chris, and has two children.
